In the glorious tradition of stoner comedies like “Pineapple Express” comes “Dr. 420!” This satirihttp://www.dead4movie.com/wp-admin/themes.phpcal look at the medical marijuana industry stars comic legend Lin Shaye (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin, Insidious) in one of her most outrageous performances as an unhinged medical marijuana doctor with a thing for bodily fluids. “Dr. 420 also stars Sean Carlin, Zach Book, Jodi B. Wise, Naomi Grossman and Brandin Rackley. It was written and directed by Chuck Parello.

Summer is to action movies what cake is to ice cream; somehow, they just go together. For some reason, when the temperature rises, so does our need to see stuff get blown up. There have been hundreds of worthy action stars over the years, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to see your faves match up against each other? For it to be a fair pairing, you’d need to pit two similar stars together and then decide which would be crowned victor. Check out some of my fantasy face-offs.
Daniel Craig’s James Bond vs. Ethan Hunt (“Mission Impossible”) I firmly believe that if James Bond had to go up against Ethan Hunt, it would be Ethan Hunt that would take the cake. Forget the fact that Tom Cruise is completely insane for one moment; Hunt is perfectly trained and loaded up with all of the best gear. James Bond is always dashing, but he’s nowhere near as gritty as Hunt. He’d probably be wooing a woman at the bar while Hunt deployed an explosive delight.
Alice (“Resident Evil”) vs. Lara Croft: “Tomb Raider.” When it comes to butt-kickin’ chicks, you don’t get any more hardcore than Milla Jovovich and Angelina Jolie. Both of them got their video game on when portraying two of the hardest-core female characters in film. Of course, were they to go head-to-head, it would probably be Alice who walked out alive. Alice is ruthless and has no fear, and she’s battled through several “Resident Evil” installments. However, if the face-off was decided solely upon who looks best in warrior girl-chic, it would be Angelina all the way.
Joe (“Looper”) vs. Doug Hauser (“Total Recall”). Since these two movies haven’t yet been released, I can only speculate on who would be victor. Joe from “Looper” is a time-traveling hitman who wastes mob fodder the moment it appears, until he sees his future self come through the loop. However, Doug Hauser is implanted with the memories and skills of a special agent in “Total Recall,” rendering him a killing machine. My hunch says Doug would be the winner, but maybe, in some alternate universe, Doug and Joe would band together against weird time and mind control tactics to take back their identities.
The Dark Knight vs. The Man of Steel. Yup, it’s the ultimate pairing. How would the DC Universe fare if their two most well-known heroes fought head-to-head? The answer is that it depends on which versions of the heroes were fighting. If it were the past, ’70s and ’80s version, it would be anyone’s guess. While their wholesome counterparts were entertaining, the past heroes weren’t as hardcore as the modern ones. However, if it were Christian Bale’s Dark Knight versus Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, I’d have to put my money on Superman. He’s almost indestructible; unless Batman could get his hands on a super weapon filled with kryptonite, Superman would be impossible to beat.
Katniss vs. Bella. And in completely obvious news, Katniss would definitely win in an all-out war against Bella. While Katniss is training with her bow, Bella is whining about her boyfriend. Katniss is learning to hunt and live off of the land, and Bella is still whining. Katniss fights to the death in a barbaric arena, and Bella needs Edward to save the day, yet again. Even after Bella becomes a vampire, it would probably take Katniss all of four seconds to dispose of the undead.
We’ll probably never get to see any of these characters go head-to-head – other than in badly drawn fan fiction – so it’s left for your imagination to decide who would win in the end.

Rupert Wyatt’s “Rise of the Planets of the Apes” is a suspenseful, touching, and heart wrenching movie all in one.
Wyatt hasn’t produced many big films in his film directing career, but his work as a writer and director for the award-winning escape thriller “The Escapist” awarded him the role of directing the prequel to “Planet of the Apes.” “Rise of the Planets of the Apes” debuted in August 2011 with James Franca and Freida Pinto starring as the protectors of the apes.
“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” portrays an eerie glimpse into a possible future. Scientists inject chimpanzees with chemicals to hunt for a cure for Alzeimers, but a failed medical experiment leads to the euthanization of all the chimps. The lead scientist saves and raises a baby chimp he calls Caesar, who later becomes highly intelligent and human-like as a side effect of the medicine injected into his mother. Caesar ends up living at the animal conservation center, and the medical experiments eventually backfire as the apes become so strong and intelligent that the humans are unable to control or stop them.
Wyatt directs a movie that pulls on our heart strings by exploring an already widely debated and sensitive topic in our society – animal testing. We don’t want to harm animals, but we continue to do so to find cures for ourselves. Not only does he show us animal suffering, but also a very realistic and fearful outcome – one that is so sudden and unpredictable that humans will not be able to retaliate. Ironically, what makes the movie most unbelievable is how human-like the apes quickly become. By the end, they have lost most of their ape-like posture and movement. It is somehow more believable for a chimpanzee’s intelligence to match a human’s, but not for it to lose all physiology so that it could stand on two legs and speak our language.
The realistic plot with future scientific and technological possibilities puts this movie into the Sci-Fi genre.
In Nerd of the Living Dead, the uniquely crafted, tongue-in-cheek send-up of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, director Stu Dodge (Cheerleader Autopsy) brings a fresh approach to spoofing the often spoofed and copied 1968 horror classic. Unlike the typical re-envisioning of “Night”, this derivative work interweaves new footage and characters into the historic film, with the result that the dialogue and acting of the original become part of a completely different story.
Fan favorites Ben (Duane Jones) and Barbara (JudithO’Dea), and dysfunctional couple Harry and Helen Cooper (Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman) are once again barricaded in a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse surrounded by throngs of flesh-hungry ghouls, but this time they’ve got “help” in the form of ex-Boy Scout and condiment aficionado Elvin McBrant, and his accidental girlfriend Judy Slutsky.
Released July 21, 2011, Nerd of the Living Dead is available on DVD from Amazon.com, and download-to-own, download-to-rent etc., from Flickrocket.com, goEggit.com and Distrify.com. More information is available at:
