Pitching Your Movie Script – Where To Start?

Movie writers are asking us “I’ve finished my book/movie script, where to pitch it to movie producers?” But this is not a technical problem about “where”, this is a problem “what” and “how”.

A movie script or a fiction book pitching might be the most complicated part in your independent movie making activity—prepare to be refused and rejected by the others. This is more dealing with the business representation than a movie activity itself.

First of all, start from the e-mail sending—probably, not the most effective way, but it might work out. Look at the “need a screenwriter” lines in Google.

Another variant for you is a movie script contests, but don’t be too excited about that, those ways are has been already tried out and we are not fools to believe in the catchphrases like “submit and be financed”.

Have finished one movie project? Don’t stop on your mission, write, write and write! Prepare at least 2 or 3 completely different movie scripts/fiction books to represent yourself from different angles. Comedy, action, drama—be creative motherfucker.

If you’re really think that your first movie script is amazing then you are far from the progress, boy. My own vision is to establish yourself as a writer firstly and then try to pursue some movie studios to even listen to you.

Try to publish your first book online (you can broadcast it here or here for example for free!), scrub some money and print it in paper in a small quantity (100 is more than enough). Make publicity as a writer (~1000-3000$) and try to built a name! Work at least 1-2 years to moving your books forward in advertising and promotion to be recognizable.

Have no time? Then rent a good looking yellow suit and try to contact with the major studios in L.A. and New York. Talk to the movie people and their agents in person and represent yourself and your project professionally. Prepare to be mostly refused, but every refusal is a step forward to a success. Somebody will notice you!

Hunt for a decent movie studios and forget about Hollywood giants like DreamWorks, MGM and Fox at the first first time, they got their own base of movie professionals. Start knocking, for example, to movie studios like these:

Check out following below useful directories of various movie studious:

Once again, if you will represent a variety of your finished projects-at least 2 or 3 finished books/movie scripts-you might be considered seriously by a movie industry. Don’t rush with no finished projects at all like a college boy, moaning “man, I got so cool ideas!” or “this is so spiritual”, the people of movie industry don’t give a fuck about your inspiration, all they need is:

  • a paper with the interesting story
  • talent
  • protected material (copyrights clearance)
  • and the shining of your yellow suit!

Have you had noticed a “sloppy moans” in this list?

However, it might be completely different than has been described here, every man has his own “karma” if you will. Remember, all starts then you are opening your mouth.

Good Luck!
